Manager Cheat Codes

Practical and realistic strategies that feel like cheat codes for you to be the manager you wish you had.

So you've been promoted to manager. Now what? How do you influence your team without becoming the enemy?

Or maybe you've been a manager for a while now but you feel stuck in a rut. You can't get your team to do anything more than the bare minimum. What can you do?

There was no "how to be a manager" class in college, and it feels like everyone is just winging it. All you know is you've had some horrible managers and you don't want to be one of them. You want to be the manager you wish you had earlier in your career.

All the books in the business section of the bookstore seem so... fake. So full of hyperbole and theory, but nothing concrete. They're just so full of useless fluff.

You're not alone!

There are many proven and practical strategies for being an effective and influential manager, without becoming the very person you hate. (You know, the one that takes all the credit, micro-manages everything you do, and seems to be only looks out for themself).

The weird thing is that the tried-and-true strategies that actually work well on a day-to-day basis don't ever seem to be documented in one place. They're scattered all over the place — a blog here, a Reddit post there — so you gather what you can and learn through trial and error.

When you finally find something that works, it feels like you've found some sort of cheat code. Why can't they all just exist in one place? Well, that's what I am working to do!

Manager Cheat Codes is a collection of tactical and hands-on things that you can do starting right now to become an influential and effective manager. It's a collection of tried-and-true methods for leveling up yourself and your team, and therefore your career.

There's nothing to buy or subscribe to. If you want to receive free updates as new cheat codes are added, you can enter your email address below (no spam or unwanted junk, I promise!).

Who am I? My name is Wes Williamson. I have over 20 years of experience as a software engineer, team lead, manager, Senior Manager (manager of managers), and Director.

This is a passion project with a goal of becoming the place to find practical and realistic strategies for being the kind of manager that people want to follow. It's what gets me up in the morning.

Obviously there are no actual cheat codes — it'll just feel like it when you try them and you start getting actual results. And when they do, I hope you'll share them so our little community can grow.
